The Strad's experts evaluate the latest string recordings
Dittersdorf, Hoffmeister and Vanhal
Description: The Berlin Philharmonic?s whizzkid bassist plays a trio of rare concertos
Musicians: Edicson Ruiz (double bass) Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra/Christian Vásquez
Composer: Dittersdorf, Hoffmeister and Vanhal
Piece: Dittersdorf's Violone Concerto no.1 in E flat major, Hoffmeister's Violone Concerto no.1 in E flat major, Vanhal's Double Bass Concerto in E flat major
Published Code: Phil.harmonie Phil 06008
One of the ?bright young things? featured in January 2011?s Strad, Edicson Ruiz here makes good his intention of recovering the repertoire written for the double bass in the late 18th century. These concertos were written for the virtuoso Johannes Matthias Sperger and in their original form require the so-called ?Viennese? tuning in 3rds and 4ths (A?D?F sharp?A, transposed according to the required key). While modern editions of this music have adapted it to the modern tuning in 4ths, Ruiz makes a convincing case for returning to the sources, demonstrating in passage after passage how the music suits the instrument like a glove.
Astute use of natural harmonics allows for full‑sounding passages in double-stops, and the tuning based on the piece?s key makes the double bass resonate with uncommon brilliance, the more so since the key of E flat major requires tuning the instrument a semitone higher. Ruiz plays with unshakeable aplomb, exhibiting a sprightly spiccato and consistent tonal imagination. Just very occasional bulges in sustained notes remind the listener that the double bass can be intractable at times. Under Christian Vásquez, the Simón Bolívar orchestra accompanies enthusiastically if with somewhat opaque sound. The recording?s spotlight is, understandably, on the soloist. Klaus Stoll?s succinct but highly informative booklet notes round off a most attractive CD.

US bassist played for 55 years in the Pittsburgh Symphony
Bassist Anthony Bianco died on 24 October at the age of 94. He was a member of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra for 55 years, 26 of those as principal.
Bianco played the tuba at high school and only took up the double bass after graduating in 1935. From 1937 to 1944 he studied with Samuel Levitan, and later took lessons from Dimitrios Dounis. While studying with Levitan, Bianco played in jazz bands, and in 1941 he had an opportunity to join the Artie Shaw Jazz Orchestra. He chose to pursue a classical career because he wanted to play under Toscanini. He fulfilled that ambition in 1943 when he subbed for the NBC Symphony Orchestra.
In 1944 he was appointed principal bass of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra under Fritz Reiner. Bianco stepped down as principal in 1969 but remained with the orchestra as principal laureate until his retirement in 1999.
During the 50s and 60s he played at the Chatauqua Festival in New York and in the orchestra of the Casals Festivals in Puerto Rico. In 1988 he was selected by the Pittsburgh Symphony to represent the orchestra in the World Philharmonic in Montreal.
Bianco taught bass for 60 years at Carnegie Mellon University, and between 1956 and 1970 he taught in a summer programme at Chatham College. He received the International Society of Bassists's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007.
